Dr. Kurt Woeller discusses behavior issues in autism and things that should be considered to help with behavioral issues in autism. Sometimes, an underlying biological issue can have a dramatic effect on behavior. For example, food allergies can have a tremendous effect on behavior and even cause self-injurious behavior. Chemicals in food can trigger reactions hours or even days later. Constipation can create behavioral issues as well. Overgrowth of clostridia in the gut can cause high levels of dopamine, which can result in extreme behaviors.
Seasonal changes can also dramatically affect behavior in autism spectrum patients. Allergies can cause behavioral issues.
