Our highly successful comic book line uses art to teach children about the concepts of burn safety. In the red-light districts, typically less than 50% of school age children have any understanding of fire or burn safety. The comic book burn safety program was originally created by two volunteer artists, Zafreen Syed and Ryan Hanser. Their first comic book was piloted with 74 school age children in West Virginia in 2009. In January 2010, the program was implemented in Kolkata and Mumbai, India during a reconstructive burn surgical mission done in partnership with Operation Smile, Harvard Brigham Hospital and Yale University. More than 200 at risk children participated in the program and learned burn prevention and safety best practices. Pre- and post- intervention studies demonstrated that students responded very well to this type of educational tool. More specifically, there was a significant increase in knowledge of fire safety among all children who participated in the program.
