Unfortunate Causes of Spring is a short film revolving around a fox and a rabbit with character designs influenced by plantlife—the fox is based on a carnivorous plant and the rabbit resembles a flower. The animation starts off with the fox having a peaceful spring day until he encounters a flower. Unfortunately for the fox, he has seasonal allergies causing him to sneeze within a close range of pollen. A sudden growl from his stomach entices a search for food. Although he is lucky enough to find a rabbit, a problem arises. A flower sprouting from the rabbit’s back leaves the fox famished. His allergic reaction brings him misfortune but tables turn when he spots a different prey. Surprisingly, this rabbit’s flower has not bloomed yet. The fox takes his chances and chases after said rabbit. Will he be successful or can the rabbit outsmart one of nature’s intelligent animals?
A huge part of my inspiration for this animation’s story comes from my personal experience with seasonal allergies. The fox depicts an exaggerated version of my reaction when I come into contact with pollen. In order to create a conflict, I decided to include a rabbit that would act as a source of pollen. This led me to develop this story of how allergies caused by spring’s new growths can lead to misfortune.
As for the characters, I wanted to challenge myself and work with quadrupeds. I remember briefly animating a bipedal fox in highschool but it was nowhere near as complex as this. Within this short film consists of walk, sneak, and run cycles I tried to accurately match to referenced videos I used. Those videos can be found in my credit list below.
