Wake boarding has been a big part of my life for the past year. I believe that anyone can do it if they try, but the challenge is convincing people to try in the first place. This is why I chose to promote the University of Surrey Wake Club.
The people in charge of the club were very easy to approach and were enthusiastic with the whole idea. I was very lucky. Everyone involved in the production was super cooperative and happy to help: the riders, production team AND location management at Thorpe Lakes.
Organisation was key to this production. Wakeboarder’s have never been praised for their punctuality, plans tend to waiver easily depending on weather. So, it was key to start planning extra-early. This allowed plenty of time to get extra footage and lee-way for participants backing out last minute, something I did encounter along the way.
A simple bass guitar track is used to set the scene. I wanted to create a sense of curiosity through close, slow-motion shots (filmed at 120fps). My inspiration for this came from the famous Guinness ‘Surfer ad’ video released in 1999.
The foley was relatively simple to find – compared to the soundtracks! I used public domain ambience sounds of wind, geese and water (mainly lakes); and managed to cut waves in order to make them sound like splashes. Some ‘thump’ sounds were taken from Final Cut Pro, as they are also free to use. The most challenging sounds to find were the sound of the boards on the sliders (the box-like obstacles), which was actually the sound of a van door closing; and the sound for mechanics of the cable, which is a film reel starting.
